Women Travelling for Umrah from Pakistan: Mahram Rules, Ladies’ Sections and Which Side of the Mosque to Stay

Women planning Umrah from Pakistan, including those travelling without a mahram, often need answers to three practical questions. Can I go alone? Which gate do I use at Masjid an-Nabawi? And which hotel side makes life easier for a woman? Most answers online stop at “yes, the mahram rule is gone”. That is only one third of the picture. This guide covers the Saudi rule, the Pakistani side of it, and the ground-level details that decide how your days actually feel in Makkah and Madinah.

Quick Answer: Can a Woman Go for Umrah Without a Mahram from Pakistan?

Yes. Saudi Arabia issues Umrah visas to adult women without a mahram. Pakistan’s Ministry of Religious Affairs confirmed in January 2026 that women confident to travel alone can do so, through separate women’s groups and with a mandatory certificate. In practice, the smoothest route is a registered group, a confirmed return ticket and hotel vouchers in your name. In Madinah, a hotel on the north side of Masjid an-Nabawi keeps you close to both women’s prayer halls.

Mahram Rules in 2026: The Saudi Side and the Pakistani Side

Do I need a mahram for Umrah from Pakistan? Decision flow

Think of the mahram question as three separate checks. Passing one does not mean you have passed the others.

1. The Saudi rule (visa and entry)

Saudi Arabia began relaxing the mahram condition in 2021 for women in groups. In October 2022, the Hajj and Umrah Minister announced that women no longer need a mahram at all. An adult woman can now get an Umrah visa on her own or as part of a group. Girls under 18 should travel with a parent or close family member.

2. The Pakistani rule (your agent and your group)

Pakistan follows the Saudi change, but adds its own safeguards. In its press briefing of 28 January 2026, the Ministry of Religious Affairs confirmed women can perform Hajj and Umrah without a mahram. It added that separate women’s groups are being formed and a certificate is now mandatory for women travelling alone. Ask your travel agent, before you pay, which certificate or declaration your group needs and who issues it.

3. The religious ruling (your own conscience)

This is where many families pause. Pakistan’s Council of Islamic Ideology has said the Ja’fari, Maliki and Shafi’i schools allow a woman to travel for Hajj or Umrah with trustworthy company and her family’s consent. Many Hanafi scholars, the school most Pakistani Sunnis follow, still require a mahram. A travel agency cannot settle this for you. Ask the scholar your family trusts, then plan around the answer.

Real tip: if a husband, father, brother or adult son can travel with you, this may make your family arrangements simpler. Confirm religious suitability with a qualified scholar.

Documents and Airport Checks Before You Fly

Pakistan airport and Umrah document checklist for women

FIA immigration at Pakistani airports has offloaded passengers on Umrah visas when they could not show a return ticket, a hotel booking or enough money for the trip. Complete papers are your best protection. Keep printed and phone copies of:

  • Passport valid for at least six months, plus CNIC
  • Umrah visa and Nusuk booking confirmation
  • Confirmed return air ticket
  • Hotel vouchers for Makkah and Madinah, with your name on them
  • Your group or agent’s letter, and the women-travelling-alone certificate if your group requires it
  • Group leader’s name and Saudi mobile number
  • Vaccination record you used for the visa
  • Some cash or a working card for the trip

Ladies’ Sections at Masjid an-Nabawi: Two Halls, Not One “Ladies Gate”

Schematic map of women's prayer halls and gates at Masjid an-Nabawi

Most pilgrims hear “stay near the ladies’ gate” and assume there is one. There isn’t. The Saudi Hajj ministry’s mosque guide describes two large women’s prayer halls, each with its own courtyards:

  • Western women’s hall: entered through gates 13 to 17
  • Northern women’s hall: entered through gates 23 to 31

The same guide lists lost-children offices and women’s washrooms near the women’s halls. Before your first prayer, decide which hall you will use. These are access zones, not a guarantee that every gate is open to women at every time. Keep mosque doors distinct from outer courtyard gates and follow current signs and staff directions. Then walk the route from your hotel once in daylight. Every gate carries its number, so take a photo of yours.

Riyaz ul Jannah (Rawdah) timings for ladies

Rawdah visits need a free permit on Nusuk, and women and men have separate slots. Under the schedule reported by the Saudi Press Agency in December 2025, women visit from after Fajr until 11:00 am and from after Isha until 2:00 am. On Fridays the morning slot ends at 9:00 am. Book through the official Rawdah permit service, because times can shift in Ramadan and peak season.

Permit holders have been entering from the southern courtyards opposite Gate 37, the Makkah Gate. That is on the opposite side of the mosque from the northern women’s hall. Plan for it if you take the late-night slot, which ends at 2:00 am. Go with at least one other woman from your group and agree on your route back before you go in.

Check your permit: Published visiting windows can change. Your confirmed Nusuk slot and current staff instructions take priority over the timetable graphic. The schematic above is a planning aid, not an official navigation map.

Which Side of Masjid an-Nabawi Should Women Stay On?

Which side of Masjid an-Nabawi to stay for women - comparison

For most women, the north side (Bada’ah and northern Markaziyah) is the best choice. It provides a useful starting point for comparing women’s access. Check the exact hotel exit and operating entrance before booking. Hotels on this side include Dar Al Taqwa Hotel, which faces King Fahd Gate 23, Dallah Taibah Hotel in Bada’ah, and Anwar Al Madinah Mövenpick, right beside the mosque’s northern side.

  • West side (Al Manakhah): a good second choice if you plan to use the western hall, gates 13 to 17
  • South side (Bani Khidrah): closer to the Rawdah entry courtyards, but the longest walk to either women’s hall for the five daily prayers
  • East side (Al-Baqi): convenient for the northern hall’s eastern gates; check the exact route before booking

The side matters more than the star rating. A three-star hotel two minutes from your hall will serve you better than a five-star one where you must walk around the mosque five times a day. Makkah for Women: Where Location Works Differently

In Masjid al-Haram, the hotel side matters less than the walking route. Tawaf and Sa’i are shared spaces for men and women, while prayer rows are separated and women pray in marked women’s areas. Staff will ask women to move if they stand in men’s rows. Because of this, choose a Makkah hotel by its gate, the walk at prayer times, and how long the lifts take at peak hours. Our guide to the best area to stay in Makkah compares each zone. If you are staying further out, read how Makkah hotels with a free Haram shuttle work at night.

Makkah day plan for women - Hateem slot and prayer timing

Two Makkah details women often miss:

  • Hateem slot for women: since June 2026, the Haram administration has given women 6:00 am to 9:00 am for prayer inside the Hateem, and men 10:00 pm to 1:00 am. Confirm the day’s opening and queue arrangements with Haram staff; entry is not guaranteed.
  • Plan around your cycle: a woman in menses cannot perform Tawaf. If your period may fall during the trip, ask for a Madinah-first itinerary or one or two extra Makkah nights. Telling your agent early is far easier than changing flights later. Our complete guide on how to perform Umrah covers each ritual in order.

Practical Tips for Your Umrah Trip

  • Ask for a women-only room. In triple and quad sharing, ask your agent in writing that your roommates will be women from your group.
  • Reach Jumu’ah early. Women’s halls in Madinah fill well before the Friday khutbah. Aim to arrive at least an hour early.
  • Carry a small bag. Women’s gate staff check bags, and large items slow your entry.
  • Fix a meeting point. Pick one numbered gate where your group meets after every prayer. Mobile networks can get slow after large prayers.
  • Use the ziyarat morning wisely. A short guided route, like our half-day Madinah ziyarat plan for families, keeps you back in time for Zuhr in your own hall.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a woman under 45 go for Umrah without a mahram from Pakistan?

Yes. The old Saudi rule that let only women over 45 travel without a mahram in a group no longer applies. Adult women can apply without treating a mahram as a universal Saudi visa requirement; approval still depends on their eligibility and documents. Your agent may still ask for a women’s-group booking and the certificate required by Pakistan’s religious affairs ministry.

Do I need an NOC from my husband or father?

Saudi Arabia does not ask for one for an Umrah visa. Some Pakistani groups ask for family consent or a certificate for women travelling alone. Confirm with your agent before booking.

Which gate is the ladies’ gate at Masjid an-Nabawi?

There are two women’s prayer halls. The western hall uses gates 13 to 17, and the northern hall uses gates 23 to 31. Choose the one closest to your hotel.

What are the Riyaz ul Jannah timings for ladies?

After Fajr until 11:00 am and after Isha until 2:00 am. On Fridays, the morning slot ends at 9:00 am. A Nusuk permit is required.

Which side of Masjid an-Nabawi is best for women?

The north side, around Bada’ah, is a useful starting point, but the best option depends on your hotel exit, current entrance and walking ability.

Can two women, such as a mother and daughter, travel for Umrah alone?

Saudi rules allow it. For safety and a smoother airport exit from Pakistan, joining a registered group is the better choice.
